Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
