TikTok Provides Viewers Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that enables them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the company disclosed that it currently hosts over 1 billion content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This advancement aligns with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by emerging content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently nonsensical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, including computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to offer the community the power to see more or less of that, based on their own choices,” commented a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

TikTok announced that there are currently over a billion videos on its app identified as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 million pieces of content are uploaded to the platform daily, making AI content a minor percentage of its total content library.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI-generated videos they see by opening the “manage topic” setting in the application and picking the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the tool cover politics, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies oblige content makers to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it bans malicious AI impersonations of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the app will now add an “AI-made” watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an collaborative effort for spotting content made by AI. This measure is intended to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also establishing a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and groups to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support charitable organizations focused on teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has defended its safety measures, following debate over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the United Kingdom. It is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in its British office, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead stated that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can protect employees by filtering out the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by people. The company reported a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
